THE JAYHAWKS

Mockingbird Time

Decca (UMO)

Release date 20 September 2011

Described as rootsy, country rock, The Jayhawks mark their long-awaited return to the studio in the original line-up with Mockingbird time - their first studio album release since 2003. It marks the return of Mark Olson, who brings his Americana and folk driven roots back into the mix. Last November Gary Louris told Roling Stone ‘Mark and I both feel that there is some business left undone and we got together and wrote some great songs.’

Tomorrow the Green Grass had a different feel to this 2011 offering - louder, definite and confident with a rocky edge. Mockingbird has a 60’s Beatle-esque influence, particularly with the title track. Harmonies pervade all tracks delivering plaintive lyrics and Olson’s influence does appear to be the more dominant one here. It could be a more progressive CSNY if you closed your eyes.

‘She Walks in so Many ways’ could be The Finn Brothers. There are a few twists of style, switching back and forth in each track. If you like, Tim Finn, Wilco, CSNY and The Beatles you will enjoy the similarities. It’s not groundbreaking or inventive like Wilco or Grandaddy but it’s a welcome return to many.
